What does dual citizenship mean?
Dual citizenship means that a person has two nationalities at the same time - in this case German and Turkish. This entails the rights and obligations of both countries, including
-Political rights (e.g. right to vote in both countries).
-obligations such as tax payments or compulsory military service (depending on the country).
-access to social benefits and state services in both countries.
Who can have dual citizenship?
1. persons of Turkish origin in Germany
-Turkish nationals who have lived in Germany for many years and wish to apply for German citizenship can retain both citizenships under certain conditions.
-In Germany, dual citizenship was partially made possible by the Citizenship Act, especially for children of migrants.
2. Germans with links to Turkey
-German nationals who work, study or have family ties in Turkey can apply for Turkish citizenship without losing their German citizenship. However, this is subject to strict conditions.
3. children with parents from both countries
-Children whose parents have different nationalities (one parent German, the other Turkish) generally receive both citizenships at birth.
Legal basis
1.German nationality law
-As a rule, the previous citizenship must be renounced when naturalizing in Germany.
-An exception applies to EU nationals and persons who cannot reasonably be expected to give up their previous citizenship (e.g. in the event of disadvantages in their home country).
2.Turkish nationality law
-Turkey allows dual citizenship without restrictions.
-Turkish nationals who acquire another citizenship can retain their Turkish citizenship under certain conditions.
3.Principle of descent (Ius Sanguinis)
-In both Germany and Turkey, ancestry plays an important role in the granting of citizenship.
Requirements for dual citizenship
