Naturalization is the process by which a person who originally holds another nationality is granted German citizenship. German citizenship offers extensive rights, including the right to vote, visa-free entry to many countries and protection by German consulates abroad. At the same time, it comes with obligations such as the recognition of the Basic Law and, in certain cases, the renunciation of the original citizenship.

Requirements for naturalization

1. minimum stay:
As a rule, a person must have lived legally in Germany for at least 8 years. For integration courses, the period can be shortened to 7 years.
2. language skills:
Applicants must prove that they have at least B1 level German.
3. integration test:
Successful completion of the naturalization test, which tests knowledge of German history, culture, politics and society.
4. secure livelihood:
The person must be able to support themselves and their family financially without being dependent on social benefits.
5. impunity:
The applicant must not have been convicted of serious criminal offenses. 6. recognition of the Basic Law: The person must declare in writing that they respect and comply with the free and democratic basic order of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Naturalization procedure

1st consultation:
Interested parties should contact the relevant naturalization authority for advice and to clarify the required documents.

2. application:
The application for naturalization must be submitted in writing to the authorities. The following documents are required:
- Residence permit
- Proof of language skills
- Proof of income
- Birth certificate and other identity documents

3rd test:
The authority examines the application, the documents and the fulfillment of all requirements.

4. naturalization certificate:
After approval, the naturalization certificate is issued. Upon receipt of this certificate, the person officially becomes a German citizen.
