A1 - Beginners (elementary language use) consisting of 24 chapters

Goal: Understand first sentences and hold simple conversations

What does A1 mean?

A1 is the first language level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It is aimed at absolute beginners. Perhaps you have never learned German before - or have only heard a few words. No problem! A1 is about learning the The basics of language and master the first steps in everyday life.

With this level you can everyday situations communicate - for example when shopping, on the bus or in a simple conversation with neighbors.

Listen & Understand

You understand A1:

  • Very Simple questions and statementswhen spoken slowly and clearly.
  • Frequently used words from everyday life (e.g. numbers, times, days of the week, names of foods or professions).

Examples:

"What's your name?" - "My name is Maria."

"Where do you live?" - "I live in Berlin."

"Would you like some tea?" - "Yes, please."

Speak

You learn:

  • Yourself and others to introduce (Name, origin, age, profession).
  • Talking in simple sentences about family, hobbies or daily routines.
  • Asking and answering questionse.g. "What time is it?" or "How much does it cost?"

Examples:

"I come from Turkey. I am 25 years old."

"I'd like a coffee, please."

"Today is Monday. I'm working in the office."

Reading & Writing

You learn:

  • Read simple texts and information - e.g. e-mails, timetables, signs or invoices.
  • Shorts, write simple sentences - about yourself, appointments or wishes.

Examples:

"Train leaves at 10:30."

"My name is Anna. I live in Hamburg."

"I'll be there tomorrow at 9 a.m."
