Vocational training

Vocational training

Vocational training in Germany follows a globally recognized model that creates a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application. This so-called dual system is particularly geared towards optimally preparing trainees for professional life.

  • Structure of the training

    1. theory at the vocational school
At vocational school, trainees are taught subject-specific and general educational content. This includes, for example, basic knowledge, legal framework conditions or industry-specific knowledge. Vocational school is usually attended one or two days a week.

    2. practice in the company
The apprentices work in a company alongside the theory. There they gain practical experience, get to know work processes and deepen the knowledge they have learned at vocational school. The practical phases often take up the majority of the training period.

    Duration and remuneration

The apprenticeship lasts between 2 and 3.5 years, depending on the profession. During this time, trainees receive a training allowance, which increases annually. Salaries vary depending on the profession and sector - technical professions often earn more than social professions.

  • Diversity of professions

There are over 300 recognized training occupations in Germany. Popular professions include:

    - Craft professions: z. e.g. carpenter, electronics technician, hairdresser
    - Technical professions: z. e.g. mechatronics technician, IT specialist
    - Commercial professions: z. e.g. office clerk, retail salesperson
    - Social professions: z. e.g. educators, nurses

    Advantages of the system

    - Practical training:
Trainees are part of working life from day one.

    - Financial support: The salary provides them with financial security during their training.

    - Good career prospects: Many graduates are taken on by their training company immediately after completing their training.

    Career after training

After successful completion, there are numerous opportunities for further training and development:

    - Master craftsmen and technicians: If you want to specialize, you can take appropriate further training courses.

    - Study: With a corresponding degree, it is also possible to study, e.g. at a university of applied sciences.

    - Specialist further training: Certificates and additional qualifications can further improve career opportunities.
