Are you in the asylum procedure in Germany and want to work? This is generally possible - but there are certain rules that you should know.

Am I even allowed to work as an asylum seeker?

Yes - but not immediately. That depends on your residence status:

If you have a

Residence permit (you have applied for asylum, the procedure is still ongoing):

  • In the first 3 months: You may do not work.

  • After 3 months: You can work - but only with the permission of the foreigners authority.

As a rule, the authority also asks the Federal Employment Agency to.

If you have a Tolerance (you must not be deported):

  • You can work when you have the Work permit issued was.

  • In some cases there is a Work ban - e.g. failure to cooperate in obtaining a passport.

Where can I work?

As an asylum seeker, you can usually work in professions for which no recognition of a degree is necessary. Frequent areas:

  • Warehouse & Logistics

  • Cleaning

  • Gastronomy & Kitchen

  • Building & Craft

  • Nursing assistance (e.g. in retirement homes)

  • Agriculture

  • Production / Factory work

 Example:

Yusuf lives in Germany with a temporary residence permit. After 3 months, he applies for a work permit and finds a job in a bakery as a kitchen assistant.

How long can I work?

If you have a Residence permit for work depending on the contract:

  • Work full time (usually 35-40 hours per week)

  • or Part-time (e.g. 20 hours per week)

  • also Minijobs are possible (up to € 538 per month, tax-free)

If you have a Training, a language course or qualification measure you may usually only up to 20 hours per week work.

What about the employment contract?

You must always have a written contract before you start work.

It states:

  • How many hours you work

  • How much money you get

  • Vacation days

  • Notice period

  • Duration of the contract (fixed-term or open-ended)

Important: Read the contract carefully and ask questions if you don't understand something. You can also have the contract checked by an advice center.
