If you live in Germany or are moving to another country, you must officially register (when moving in) or re-register (if you move). Even if you move away from Germany, you must unsubscribe. This is required by law - and necessary for many things, e.g. if you:

  • need an identity card or residence permit

  • want to open an account

  • rent an apartment

  • Apply for child benefit or social benefits

Who has to register and when?

  • All personswho are new to Germany or are moving within Germany

  • The application must within 2 weeks after moving in at the Residents' Registration Office (also: Citizens' Office or Citizens' Bureau)

What documents do I need to register?

  1. Identity card or passport

What is stored at the office?

The Office stores personal data such as:

  • Name

  • Date of birth

  • Address

  • Marital status

What to do when moving house?

  • After the move, you must register in the new city register - within 2 weeks

What do you do if you move away from Germany?

What is electronic residence registration?

In some federal states (e.g. Bavaria, NRW, Baden-Württemberg) you can apply for register onlineif your ID card has the online function activated.

  • Not available everywhere - check with the citizens' office beforehand

  • With the first registration in Germany it is always necessary to go to the office

What else does the residents' registration office do?

In addition to registration, the Citizens' Registration Office also takes care of:

  • Identity cards (identity card, children's passport)
